Texas Size Celebration

When the Texas Rangers took the field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Tuesday night, they were looking to do something that no other Rangers team has done before, win a playoff series. The Texas Rangers came into the MLB in 1961, but prior to Tuesday night they were the only organization in the majors to never have won a playoff series before. That fate changed when Cliff Lee threw a complete game, only giving up one earned run and was backed by the five runs scored by the Rangers offense. The Tampa Bay Rays had their chances in the game, but when they needed a hit, Lee struck them out or got them to pop up or ground out.  When the game was over, the Rangers had achieved their first ever playoff series win. Following the game, the players partook in a MLB tradition series win celebration, but the Rangers knew that in order for the entire team to participate in the celebration they needed to get something special for center fielder Josh Hamilton. Hamilton is a recovering alcoholic and did not want to join his teammates in the celebration because the team would be popping open Champaign bottles and showering their teammates in alcohol. On this night, Hamilton’s teammates had something special for him. When Hamilton walked into the clubhouse, he saw his teammates waiting for him with bottles of Canada Dry ginger ale. Previously, when the Rangers clinched the American West division title, Hamilton did not join in the celebration, but on this night he was united with his teammates. I think that the Rangers made a classy move by involving their leader, Hamilton in their celebration by not pressuring him into being around alcohol, but spraying Ginger Ale on him which made him more comfortable in joining in the festivities. The Rangers will host the New York Yankees in the ALCS in pursuit of their first American League Championship.

  1. I definitely think that this was not only a smart move for the team because they would not want to put pressure on Hamilton due to his previous experiences, but it was also a nice showing of respect. There are not too many people out there that would do something like this for one of thier teammates. Also, in this society it seems as if most people have to go out and drink to have a good time and that just is not the case for some. There are numerous others ways to have a good time and I feel as if we need to reflect on those and realize that there are others out that do not have the same interests as the general majority. For such an event as winning their first play off series, it was nice to see the team unity as well as the bringing back of old traditions.

  2. I hope the ALCS goes to game seven so we get to see another Yankees Cliff Lee showdown.

  3. The Rangers have been a shock this season. I think their younger players have really developed well and adding Cliff Lee is always a nice way to start things off, I mean he's (absolut-lee) amazing, as the old philly saying went back when he was pitching them into the world series. Even what he did to the Yankees the other night is amazing especially for that strong hitting line up. As they sit 3-2 a top the Yanks I feel like they will be heading to the World Series even though that hurts me to say because I am a huge Yankees fan, but the stories of the players on that team would make it nice to see them win one. Hamilton, Vlad, Lee, all strong stories and strong players and leaders and deserve to win.

  4. I love moments like these in pro sports. It shows how much of a family a team can become and how much these athletes care about each other.

  5. I really really really hope that the Taxans now beat the Yankees, becauseI can't stand the Yankees! The Yankees don't deserve to win another World Series...they just spend too much and get what they want with only spending a little fine...
